Holiday sewing and a newborn flyaway jacket

See this pile?

This is my holiday sewing. Yeah. It could be worse. The bulk of the fabric here is actually cut into pieces and prepped. Now I just have to sew those pieces into glorious gifts that everyone will love. The bad thing about holiday sewing is that I can't share any of the finished products here until after they have been opened by their recipients. I do have a few other projects planned that I can actually show here though.

And now! My project for One Yard Wonders!

This isn't the sample they used for the book. Oh no. The one in the book is styled and photographed in a far more appealing way. Seriously, the photo stylist and the photographer both did an awesome job. I, on the other hand, am always in a hurry, so I just plopped this down in front of my sewing machine and snapped away. Also, I didn't come up with the name Newborn Flyaway Jacket. I am lousy at coming up with cute names for things. I think I submitted this as "jacket for baby". So original! Thank you, Trish and Rebecca, for coming up with a better name.

Anyway, I made this for a little lady who has yet to make her appearance. Come out whenever you're ready Emerson. I'm sure your mom would prefer sooner to later. These little jackets have become my go-to baby gift. So, if you're pregnant, and you know me well enough to be receiving a gift for your baby, you're probably getting one of these! Hooray!!

A little more on One Yard Wonders...this is a fantastic book. I promise I'm not just saying that because I have a project in there (page 186 btw). In addition to the 101 projects (or 106 if you buy it from Barnes and Noble. They had a special edition with 5 extra projects printed), there is a section of sewing fundamentals at the beginning of the book. This would make a great gift for someone who is just learning to sew, or really, anyone who already loves to sew. Fabric addicts will appreciate the fact that each project requires one yard of fabric or less. We tend to fall in love with yardage before we really know what we're going to do with it, and end up buying just one yard. It happens. A lot. So, if you're looking for a little something for the sewist in your life, or you need some handmade gift ideas, this is the book for you!

  4. I'm going to start on this project tonight! Can't wait to see the finished product :) I was wondering if you'd ever tried it with polar fleece instead of flannel? Or would that be too bulky for the design?

    Thanks! (and GREAT JOB!!!!!)

  5. I'm so excited to hear you're going to be making my project! I have never tried it with polar fleece, but I *think* it would be fine as long as you use extra wide double fold bias tape with it. Good luck, and be sure to post the finished result in the One Yard Wonders Flickr group :)
