Bookshelf Update

Look what my sweet husband showed up with a couple of days after last my post:

Expidit shelves from Ikea!  2 of the 4 shelf squares (shown here), AND one of the 8 shelf units (which we ended up using for DVDs).

He was in Pittsburgh for work, but I never expected him to surprise me with these.  We both drive pretty smallish to average sized cars.  I didn't think it was possible to fit all of the shelves in his, but he managed.  The 8 shelf Expidit required him to remove the headrest on the drivers side and recline the seat all the way back.  The things he does for me :)

I'm pretty happy with them so far.  Most of my books fit into one of the shelves, and I'm using the other for craft/stationery related storage.

Rather than shove some of larger my sewing tools into the closet, I decided to leave them out on display.  I use them enough, and they're pretty to look at, so why hide them away?  The sewing box used to belong to my mom, the tailor's ham, sleeve roll, and hem marker were thrifted somewhere along they way, the owl was a handmade gift from my friend Katie, and I picked up the print at this year's Renegade Craft Fair from Rhymes with Twee.  Things are really coming together in this space.  The final piece is a small bed for guests.  I have the frame set up, the bedding is ready to go, and the mattress is on its way.  Who's coming to visit?

  1. I use these shelves as a part of my desk, they are so useful! Love the way you've used them in your space.

    1. I love this line of shelving (along with everyone else on the interwebs)! They're so versatile, and really sturdy without being super expensive.

  2. Love the bookshelves!! How sweet of your husband to pick them up for you! I never realized how much people love IKEA until just recently. Knoxville doesn't have one, but Atlanta does. So whenever people come visit, we HAVE to go to Ikea. Like, it's required. Just like my friends make us eat at places like Cheesecake Factory when they are in town. Forget about seeing anything local... my out of town guests want the big names! ;)

    1. If you want something that's reasonably stylish and you're on a budget, IKEA is where it's at. Although these shelves are pretty sturdy, I just wish some of the other stuff they carry was a *touch* more sturdy. I like the style of their furniture, but there's not much of a middle ground price wise between IKEA and Design Within Reach (which is sooooo not within our reach, haha).

    1. It's actually a whole set of 4 canisters! They're nested inside one another for now. At one time I actually did keep my flour, sugar, etc in them, but now I keep those things in the pantry. I'm trying to come up with a use for them...maybe to hold buttons?
